Coffee Hour is the weekly department seminar, which typically takes place each Friday during the semester, usually from 3:30 to 5:00 PM.

The coffee hour convenes at 3:30 PM, as department members and guests convene in 319 Walker for refreshments and of course, coffee (and tea). A few minutes before 4 PM, the lights in 319 are flashed on and off, signifying that it is time for those attending the seminar to make their way downstairs to 112 Walker, where the talk usually takes place. At 4 PM, a faculty member, typically one of the coffee hour chairs, shares select announcements about recent happenings in the department, ("Good News") and introduces the speaker. Then, the speaker will give his or her presentation, open the floor up to questions, and wrap up by around 5 PM. Often, soon after the formal coffee hour concludes, the speaker, faculty, and students will continue the discussion at Zola New World Bistro (in nearby "Downtown").

Coffee Hour ChairsEdit

Generally, two faculty members in the department are in charge of setting the lineup of speakers for a given academic year. These positions rotate on a yearly basis.

Coffee Hour To GoEdit

Every coffee hour is streamed live online for remote access. Online viewers may also submit questions for the speaker. An archive of past recorded coffee hours is also available.

Coffee Hour ResponsibilitiesEdit

The new "cohort" (first year Masters and PhD students) are in charge of organizing the weekly coffee hour, including advertisement, procurement of refreshments, and setup/cleanup. Further details can be found in the "Coffee Hour Responsibilities" section of this Wiki.
